a. grey-striped;

gráta (grćt; grét, grétum; grátinn), v. (1) to weep; g.
hástöfum, to weep aloud; (2) to bewail, weep for one (ţú
grćtr góđan mann).
grátan-ligr, a. tearful.
grát-fagr, a. beautiful in tears;
-feginn, a. weeping for Joy.
grátinn, pp. tearful.
grát-ligr, a. pitiable, deplorable.
grátr, m. weeping; setr grát at e-m, one bursts into
tears.
grát-raust,f. tearful voice;
-stokkinn, pp. bathed in tears.
grá-vara, f. grey fur (harm hafđi fengit á fjallinu
mikla grávöru).
grefta (-fta, -ft), greftra (ađ), v. to bury (greftrađr
at fornum siđ).
greiđa (-dda, -ddr), v. (1) to unravel, disentangle,
arrange; g. hár, to comb or dress the hair; greiddi hón hárit
frá augum sér, she stroked back the hair from, her eyes; (2) to
make or get ready (g. segl); g. til vađ, to get ready a fishing
line; g. til um vápn, to get tht weapons ready; (3) to
speed, further (g. ferđ e-s); refl., greiddist honum vel, it
sped well with him, he got on well; (4) to pay (g. fé af hendi);
g. fram, to pay out; (5) to discharge, perform; g. skírslu
af höndum, to perform the ordeal; g. vörđ, to keep watch; g.
róđr, to pull at the oars; g. atróđr, g. til atlögu, to attack
(in a sea-fight); g. mál, to settle a case.
greiđ-fara, a. indecl. walking with speed;
-frr, a. passable, easy to pass (ţar var eigi greiđfrt);
-gengr, a. = -frr (eigi er hér -gengt).
greiđi, m. (1) disentanglement, arrangement; gera greiđa
á málinu, to put the case right; skipađist lítt til greiđa međ
ţeim, nothing was settled between them; (2) entertainment,
accommodation; gera e-m greiđa, to give one entertainment.
greiđ-liga, adv. (1) readily, promptly; (2) quite;
greiđliga berr, completely stripped; (3) downright, actually
(ţó at engir menn bćri vápn á mik greiđ-liga).
greiđ-ligr, a. (1) ready, prompt; var söngrinn eigi greiđligr,
the song did not go smoothly; (2) clear, plain (greiđlig
orđ).
greiđ-mćltr, pp. of ready speech.
greiđr (greiđ greitt), a. (1) clear, free from obstacles
(greiđ leiđ, gata); (2) ready to serve (góđr ok greiđr viđ
alla sína nágranna).
greiđ-skapr, m. (1) readiness, promptness; (2) entertainment.
greiđsla, f. = greizla.
greiđ, m. earl, count.
grein (pl. -ir), f. (1) branch (of a tree), division;
(2) point, head, part (í öllum greinum); í annarri g., in
the second place; (3) cause, reason; fyrir ţá g., therefore;
(4) distinction; sjá grein handa, to discern one's hands; gera grein á e-u, to explain; (5) understanding, discernment;
glřggrar greinar, sharpwitted; (6) dissent, discord (varđ
mart til greina međ ţeim); vald fyrir utan alla g., undisputed (absolute)
power.
greina (-da, -dr), v. (1) to divide into parts (veröldin
var greind í ţrjár hálfur); (2) to discern, distinguish (g. gang
himintungla); (3) to expound, tell, record; sem áđr er greint,
as is told above; sem síđarr greinir, as will be told
hereafter; (4) impers., menn (acc.) greinir á, they disagree, quarrel;
(5) refl., greinast, to branch out, be separated (svá
sem tungurnar greindust); g. á e-u, at e-u, to disagree about; impers.,
tók at g. međ ţeim kumpánum, they began to quarrel.
greina-mikill, a. sensible, clever.
greinar-laust, a. n. (1) indiscriminately; (2) unconditionally;
-mál n. reasonable case.
greina-vćnn, a. likely to cause a difference or dissension.
greini-liga, adv. distinctly;
-ligr, a. distinct, clear.
gretning, f. distinction.
greiningar-vit, n. discernment
greip (pl. greipr), f. the space between the thumb and the
other fingers (kom blóđ á hönd ţóri ok rann upp á greip-
