The Northern Way

Old Norse Bibliography

The proposition that there was ever a unified religion or mythology accepted and known throughout the ancient Germanic world (or even the Nordic world as a whole) has long been unsustainable. Indeed, as the Grimm brothers Deutsche Sagen confirms, religious ideas and beliefs in these geographical areas have always varied by time, place, fashion, cultural and social environment, and the general demands of society.

A similar point has been made independently in two recent articles: see Shippey, ‘A Chair, A Sock. and Language, and ‘Alias over Habeo’: The Elves as a Category Problem, in The Shadow-Walkers, pp 157-88 (pp 184, 187, 382, 388)
